as we experience the

In December 2024, we will embark on a 6 month cruise

around the world, starting from Ft. Lauderdale

and ending in New York.

 

We will visit 44 countries, go through all time zones,

cross the International Date Line, visit 6 continents, travel through the

Panama Canal, and take 160 shore excursions with South African safaris. 

There will be plenty to do on ship while at sea as it has 2 swimming pools,

8 restaurants,a fitness center, 9 lounge areas, a sauna and a small and large

theater complex.

Thursday, December 19, 2024

Leave Ft. Lauderdale

Well, we made it to Emerald City.

 

We were greeted at airport by Gloria, a Viking rep, who took our picture.

 

We left Ft. Lauderdale at 5:30

today, and made a grand

entrance onto ship. It’s all Christmas decorations.

 

Unpacked and settled in,

ate dinner and crashed.

 

Day 2

Friday, December 20, 2024

 

Sailing the Gulf of Mexico

Heading southwest in the

Gulf of Mexico to our

destination of Cozumel, Mexico.

 

Attending a welcome to Viking

meeting tonight.

 

Have already met lots of

interesting passengers.

 

Tonight we saw Viking Port

Talk, describing upcoming

excursions for tomorrow.

Cozumel, Mexico

This morning we docked in

Cozumel, Mexico and

left the ship to go on

2 excursions.

Jungle ATV Adventure
Saturday, December 21

 

 

 

So Tom Sawyer and Becky Thatcher,

AKA Drake & Bev, had a rumble in

the jungle. We each had our own ATV

with 28 other riders. We went

through a water filled, potholed, super bumpy

jungle trail for over an hour. It was

fun and different as this was our first

ATV ride ever.

Saturday, December 21

We toured a sacred Pre-Colombian

Mayan Religious Site in Cozumel, Mexico.

We saw numerous ruins of Ancient

Mayan temples with our guided

tour group. Our guide

described the history and

culture of this site that dates

back over 800 years.

Day 4

Sunday, December 22

 

Sailing the Caribbean Sea

Today we are at sea, heading south to Cartegena, Columbia.

Bev started the day with a water aerobics class. Very choppy pool waters, due

to rough seas, and I have never had a class like that.

 

Drake went to fitness center for weights and to practice Karate.

 

After breakfast, we went to a lecture called Age of Discovery

that began with Columbus and Vasco da Gama.

 

 

Tonight we attended an Explorers’ Society

meeting for previous Viking guests to mark

the occasion. We actually ran into a

couple from our Pharoahs and Pyramids

tour from July of 2022. Basil and Linda.

 

 

 

Day 5

Monday, December 23

 

Sailing the Caribbean Sea

 

 Today we attended lectures.

 

The first was about The

History and Making

of the Panama Canal.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Next was The History

of Columbia, where we

are heading.

 

 

 

 

 

The third was a port talk on

Cartagena, Columbia to go

over what we will see on our

excursion tomorrow.

Tuesday, December 24

Those who wander find new paths.

So today, we took a four hour guided walking tour of

Cartagena, Columbia. 

 We saw numerous neighborhoods, a huge 18th

Century stone fort that protected Cartagena, many

small neighborhoods with narrow alleys and streets.

We went into 3 old CatholicChurches, shopping districts and

got the true flavor of this fascinating

South American Spanish City.

 

Day 7

Colon, Panama

Rainforest & Aerial Tram

Wednesday, December 25

A Trip Through the Tropical Treetops

 

Enjoy a bird’s-eye view of the lush Gamboa

rainforest on board an open-air aerial tram.

 

Today we airlifted into a rainforest in Colon, Panama.

We rode an aerial tram up through the dense jungle.

 

We saw ant and termite nests on many of the trees.

 

Walked up to an observation tower above the tree line,

and got great views of the rainforest and the Panama Canal –

which we will be going through all day tomorrow.

 

 

 

After the tram ride, we visited their

wildlife sanctuary which included 4 sloths,

a butterfly garden and exotic

poison dart frogs.

Hard to see frogs as they are

sooo small.

 

 

 

Day 8

Thursday, December 26

 

Sailing through

the Panama Canal

into the Atlantic Ocean

Today, we went through the Panama Canal

in slow motion – 3 knots. We watched as

water levels rose and fell, as our ship

assended 87 feet and decended

87 feet to go from the Caribbean

Sea side until we got to the

Pacific side. An engineering marvel.

Now we know how the whole process works.

 

 

Our first lock was the Gatun Locks.

Second lock was the Pedro Miguel Locks.

And that was followed by the

Miraflores Locks, after which

we were in the Pacific Ocean.

 

Day 9

Friday, December 27

Sailing the Pacific Ocean

We are on our way to Costa Rica, so we have

a day at sea. We plan on attending lectures.

 

Our first is a lecture about Global

Navigation of the Pacific.

 

Secondly, a Seabird

Natural History lecture.

 

 

Thirdly, what natural forces

and disasters are under the

Pacific Ocean.

 

Lastly, a port talk on

Puntarenas, Costa Rica

for our excursion tomorrow.

Saturday, December 28

 

Today we took a bus tour of Puntarenas,

Costa Rica. We stopped in the town square,

watched local children dance, and visited

a Catholic Church on the square. We

got to know the flavor of the town.

Saturday, December 28

While all the other kids were rockin’

round the clock, we were hoppin’

and boppin’ to the Crocodile Rock.

Today we took an eco boat river tour

and saw crocodiles, howler monkeys and various birds.

We sailed amid the mangroves on the Tarcoles River.

Our adventure unfolded near the Carara

National Park, on Costa Rica’s Pacific coast.

 

 

Day 11

Sunday, December 29

At Sea

Today we attended 3 lectures

 

In the morning, we listened

how the Soviet Union launched

it’s first space craft and the

early results of the space race.

 

We learned about future Viking

river cruises, as we are

planning on a river cruise in

2026,  European Sorjourn.

 

This afternoon, we went to 2

lectures. The first about Charles

Lindburgh and the second

about Oceans and the history of

scuba diving in the oceans.

 

Day 12

Monday, December 30

Sail the Pacific Ocean

During the day on sea days, we

have been spending our time

going to lectures.

 

On days at sea, we enjoy time at  the pool,

Drake works out at the gym. Bev has gone

to water aerobics and a stretching session,

so there is always something on the agenda.

 

Our first lecture to about a Florida railroad

run by Henry Flagler from Miami to Key West.

 

Next lecture was about the Soviet Union’s

space program and their

successes and failures.

 

Drake did a trivia session which he enjoyed.

 

After lunch we heard about Captain Sulley

and his airplane that landed in

the Hudson River.

Today, we had a lecture on the Flora and Fauna

of desert environments in Mexico and California.

 

Then we attended a lecture about the history of time zones around the world.

 

Another about animals used as tests in space flight programs.

Wednesday, January 1, 2025

Sailing the Pacific Ocean

Happy New Year

Today we celebrated the new year by doing laundry. First for us, laundry on a cruise.

Another first, Drake gained 2 pounds, and Bev lost 2 pounds. How did that happen???

Bev just spotted a dolphin out our window. Pretty exciting.

We are planning on more lectures today. First off subject is the history of canals and

railway transportation systems.

Then another on air traffic controllers and the history behind it.

Viking is having a special New Year’s Lunch, so we will check that out.

After lunch, we are going to a Viking travel presentation, focusing on expeditions.

Lastly, a port talk abouit our stop in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico tomorrow.

Whale Watching

Thursday, January 2

This morning we went on a whale

watching eco boat tour and saw 2

different pods of humpback whales.

 

Saw whales breaching, water spouts from

their blowhole, and tail waving. Very hard to get

pictures because it happens so quickly.

We took an hour long boat excursion

around the bay of Cabo. Saw the

natural stone arch, the beaches and

got a flavor of tourist trade in Cabo.

Friday, January 3

Another day at sea

We attended several lectures today

 

First a lecture about our return to the

moon and the journey into deep space.

 

After lunch, we went to a lecture on

the History of Whaling.

Very interesting.

 

 

Day 17

Saturday, January 4

Sailing the Pacific Ocean

Today was spent at sea

 

Drake went to gym and did Karate and lifted weights.

Bev spent time on the computer updating pictures

and general computer work.

 

After breakfast, we went to a lecture about

California’s Diverse Wildlife. Beautifully done and

beautiful pictures.

 

Our second lecture was about

Navigation before the invention of GPS.

 

No other lectures today, as people are packing

and leaving the ship in Los Angeles, where the

remainder of the world cruisers will be boarding.

 

In Los Angeles, we have to go to a CVS as our electric

toothbrush blew out. So Bev arranged an Uber ride,

something we haven’t done in 10 years.

Malibu Coastline & Getty Villa

Sunday, January 5

A World-Class Collection

and Magnificent Vistas.

 

We visited on Sunday. On Monday, a forest fire started in Palasides, CA.

On Tuesday, it spread to Malibu and the Pacific Coast Highway.

The PCH was closed down.  This is the route we took to the Getty Villa,

as the fire destroyed some of the buildings, businesses and landscapes.

We saw the Santa Monica Pier from the bus, which was damaged by the fires.

The Getty Villa also suffered external damages and had to be closed down.

We were very lucky to get to see this scenic area.

Today we took a beautiful drive

down The Pacific Coastal Highway

through Malibu. We went to the

Getty Museum and saw

tremendous art works from

the ancient Romans,

Greeks and Egyptians.

 

On the drive we saw the Pacific

Ocean, surfers attempting to surf,

and million dollar homes

with the back of their houses

directly on the PCH,

with front having stunning

ocean views.

 

Afterwards, we took a Viking

shuttle into Long Beach to an

outlet mall, where we caught

an Uber to get ourselves a

replacement electric toothbrush.

 

After dinner, we attended

another lecture about

Pacific Exploration.

 

 

Day 19

Monday, January 6

At Sea

Another day at sea

This morning, Drake did Karate

and weight lifting in the gym.

Bev did the usual computer updates, etc.

 

After breakfast, we went to our first

lecture to learn about North

America’s earliest inhabitants.

 

Later in the morning,

we listened to a lecture about

California and the West Coast.

 

Our last lecture was about a

motorcycle ride around the world

and the adventures and mishaps

the couple encountered.

 

 

 

Day 20

Tuesday, January 7

Sailing the Pacific Ocean

We have so far changed our time

zone 3 times. We are currently on LA

time, but will be going back another

hour when we hit Hawaii.

 

 

Today we are at sea and plan on a

couple lectures

 

This morning, we will hear a

lecture about the natural history

of the Hawaiian Islands.

 

 

Second lecture was Faith of our

Fathers, and how religions emerged

from the American experience.

 

Day 21

Wednesday, January 8

Sailing the Pacific Ocean

Today, we have a busy day at sea.

 

Drake worked out the in gym, weights and Karate.

Bev caught up on website, etc.

 

After breakfast, we have a number of lectures

and events to go to. Many of the lectures we attend

are really set ups for us to understand the next port of call

we will be seeing. They help us with the history, geology,

culture, plants, animals and overall geography of the region.

This way we know what we are heading into.

 

 

First is about Life in the Deep Sea, talking

about huge reptiles and sharks.

 

That’s followed by a lecture on the

Creation of Polynesia.

 

 

After lunch, we go to the pool deck, take a dip

in the pool – water was cold today. The movement

of the ship causes very choppy pool waters.

Then sit on lounge chairs and relax.

 

 

Later on, we have a lecture on

Lighthouses of the Pacific.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Day 22

Thursday, January 9

Sailing the Pacific Ocean

At sea today, lots of activities to consider.

 

Drake was at the gym for Karate and weight lifting.

Bev was updating computer.

 

Our first lecture was about The Vikings,

the real story behind the legacy.

 

 

 

 

There was a photography workshop given

today about how to get the most out of our andoid camera.

 

 

Another lecture about the Gods of Polynesia.

 

After lunch, there was a lecture on Ocean

Currents and climates.

 

There was a port talk about our

upcoming stop in Honolulu.

 

 

After dinner there was a talk about Polynesia

before Cook and the Europeans arrived.

 

 

Day 23

Friday, January 10

 

Sailing the Pacific Ocean

Drake was off to the gym for

Karate and weight lifting.

 

 

Time for planning for Bev.

Looked into the USS Arizona Memorial tour for

tomorrow at the Pearl Harbor Museum, how to get

tickets, UBER ride, shuttle, etc. Seems easy enough.

 

 

After breakfast today, we have a couple lectures.

 

First was about Tropical Coral Reefs.

 

Then we got a history of December 7, 1941,

from the catastrophe to the future.

 

This afternoon, we had another port talk

to learn about the history

and culture of our stop

in Nawiliwili, Hawaii.

Honolulu Highlights

& Pearl Harbor

Saturday, January 11

Today we went to the Pearl Harbor

Memorial site in Honolulu.

We visited museums explaining the

events and the attack on December 7, 1941.

 

Took a short boat ride to the

USS Arizona Memorial. It was a somber

and very moving experience.

We could see the remains of the

USS Arizona in the water below us. Over

900 men lost their lives on that day.

 

Diamond Head Hike

Saturday, January 11

After lunch we hiked the Diamond

Head hike in Honolulu. It was full of

switchbacks and stairs, as we climbed

520 feet to the summit. The trail had been

cut into the volcanic rock of the crater.

 

At the top we had fantastic views

of Waikiki Beach, the dramatic

coastline of Honolulu and a full range

view of the Diamond Head crater.

We went into a pillbox, left over from

WWII, which was a sea defense of Hawaii.

 

We were adventurous and did

this hike on our own, away

from Viking tour group.

After our hike, we walked to the

Waikiki Beach, where Drake went

into the water, while Bev

only got her feet wet.

We noticed how narrow the beach was,

and there were many surfers trying for waves.

A gorgeous, very popular beach,

even if very small.

Kauai, Hawaii

Kalapaki & Hule’ia River by Catamaran

Sunday, January 12

Today we took a catamaran eco boat tour

of the Hule’ia River in Kauai.We went up

river for a few miles and saw mangrove

trees lining the banks, and lush

dense tropical forest vegetation. It was quite

and serene,  as we learned about the

ecology of the land.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 Kilohana Plantation

Sunday, January 12

This afternoon, we visited the Kilohana

Plantation in Kauai. Started out with a train

ride through the plantation and saw how

they grew bananas, avacodas, taro

and various other fruits and vegetables. 

We stopped along the way and fed pigs,

horses, cows and donkeys. 

We were also treated to a local hula dance by local artists.

 

 

Day 26

Monday, January 13

Sailing the South Pacific Ocean

Today was another day at sea, as we ate

breakfast with the sunrise over the Pacific.

 

This morning we had a lecture on Human

Evolution. Another lecture on Polynesian culture. 

Bev cut out of the Polynesian lecture and got

a couple games of Eurche in.

 

After lunch, we went to the pool, vegged

out. Then attended a lecture on whale and

orca communication.

 

Then we had dinner with the sunset over the

Pacific Ocean. Beautiful sunrise and sunset.

It was a clear night, and we went on

deck for star gazing. With a special

app, we saw planets, constelations,

The ISS, and Hubble telescope.

 

 

Day 27

Tuesday, January 14

Sailing the South Pacific Ocean

Drake started the day in the

gym, doing Karate and weights.

 

Today, we again had breakfast with a

wonderful sunrise, as we head south

towards the Equator.

 

We saw a lecture on various modern

leaders that made Hawaii what it is today.

 

Bev got in a couple games of Euchre.

 

Drake went to a lecture on emeralds,

which complimented a

previous lecture on pearls.

He learned about the history of these

gems and how to identify quality. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Day 28

Wednesday, January 15

Sailing the South Pacific Ocean

 

Today we cross the Equator,

and Viking had a special

Equator Crossing Ceremony. 

Today, we had several lectures.

 

 

The first was about Ancient Religions and Polynesian culture.

Ceremony on the pool deck.

We first had to pay homage by

bowing to King Neptune and a

huge dead fish. Then we along

with hundreds of other

passengers jumped into the

water to get our initiation. We

are now honary members of the

Order of the Shellback.

Our upcoming stop in

Bora Bora, French Polynesia

has been cancelled due to a

medical emergency on board.

 

 

 

We also attended a lecture about future

World Cruises now being offered by Viking

for 2026-2027 journeys. They had

much of the same route as we are on now,

but made it shorter in length and days and

added in some new ports in

Africa and in northern Europe.

 

 

Day 29

Thursday, January 16

Sailing the South Pacific Ocean

Our travel route has changed due to an on

board medical emergency. So we are

on our way to Tahiti. Should take us a

couple days, arriving on Saturday,

January 18.

Drake starts the day with

Karate and weights in the gym.

Bev slept in.

 

 

Today, we had several lectures of interest.

After breakfast, our first lecture was about

Riding the Waves of Change in the South Pacific.

 

Afterwards, we had another lecture about

World Heritage Sites in Oceania.

 

Our port talk today was about

Papeete, Tahiti, where

we will visit on Saturday.

 

 

After dinner, we had another lecture

about Space Weather,

a New View of the Sun.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Day 30

Friday, January 17

Sailing the South Pacific Ocean

We have now been on our journey for

4 weeks, traveling several thousand

miles, trying new foods,

including octupus, meeting many

new people, and having a relaxing,

wonderful time. We have gotten over

our colds, and are ready for our next

excursion adventure.

 

 

After Drake did Karate and weights

in the gym, we moved on to our

lectures and activities for the day.

 

 

First lecture was about Extreme Life:

From Early Earth to Outer Space.

 

 

 We attended a lecture given by

Mick Dawson, the man who rowed

the north Pacific Ocean from Japan to

San Francisco, as part of a 2 man team.

 

 

 

Later this afternoon was a port talk,

about our changing itinerary in French Polynesia.
